Ortto: Scaling design across product and brand.

As Ortto's design lead, I built a unified design system that scales across their entire product ecosystem—from the core platform to marketing materials. I continue to work with the team on an ongoing basis.

The Challenge

Ortto's rapid growth created familiar growing pains. With multiple teams shipping features independently, design inconsistencies were creeping in. Users were getting mixed experiences, and the team was spending too much time reinventing the wheel.

“Christian is a generational talent. He has worked amongst the best visual and user experience designers in Silicon Valley and has pioneered (and inspired) automation user interface designs that have been used successfully by thousands of Enterprise customers world-wide.”

My Approach

People First Rather than just building components, I created a flexible foundation that can evolve with the business. Every decision was made with scale in mind.

Systems Thinking I start by understanding how teams actually work. The processes, pain points, and what success looked like for each stakeholder.

Practical Implementation I focused on solutions that teams could actually adopt and maintain, not just beautiful documentation that sits unused.

What I Built

Design System A comprehensive component library with clear guidelines, accessibility standards, and real-world usage examples. Everything from buttons to complex data visualizations.

Brand Guidelines Consistent visual language that works across product interfaces, marketing campaigns, and customer touchpoints.

Team Processes Workflows and governance that keep the system healthy as it grows, including contribution guidelines and regular design reviews.

Scalable Foundation This foundational work has facilitated all of Ortto's current and future projects—journey builder, SMS, talk integrations, data sources, and more. Every surface, every interaction, every system—designed to scale.

The Results

Design consistency improved across all touchpoints, development velocity increased immensely, and the team can now focus on solving user problems instead of reinventing the wheel.

But the real win? Ortto's users now experience a cohesive, polished product that feels intentional at every step of their journey, voted number #1 for ease of use on G2 crowd.

“Christian is able to take complex concepts and distill them into friendly and accessible designs. His passion, attention to detail and work ethic is incomparable to anyone I have ever worked with. I cannot recommend him more highly.”

Built to Last

The design system and brand guidelines completely transformed Ortto's business. What started as a solution to inconsistent design patterns became the foundation for everything they build.

The system is so robust and well-architected that I'm now able to facilitate all product design work across the entire business single-handedly. New features, marketing campaigns, product launches—everything flows through the system I built, allowing for rapid iteration without sacrificing quality or consistency.

It's rare to see a design system have this level of impact on a business. But when you build something that truly scales, it doesn't just solve today's problems—it enables tomorrow's possibilities.
